What Is Pay-at-End Billing for Restaurants? How the Tab System Works

Pay-at-End billing lets restaurant customers order multiple times and settle a single bill at the end of their meal. Here's how it works, when to use it, and how Orderzy implements it.

Restaurant bill on the table

Pay-at-End billing is a payment model for dine-in restaurants where the customer places one or more orders during their meal and pays a single consolidated bill at the end. Instead of paying for each dish as it is ordered, the customer runs a tab, and the restaurant collects payment once before they leave.

This is how most traditional sit-down restaurants in India already work: customers order, eat, order more, and then ask for the bill. Pay-at-End software formalises this flow digitally.

How the tab system works in Orderzy.

When a restaurant on Orderzy is configured for Pay-at-End, here is the complete flow:

  1. A customer scans the QR code at their table and places their first order. No payment is required at this step.
  2. Orderzy creates a Dining Session tied to that table. Every subsequent order from the same table is added to this session.
  3. The kitchen receives each order in real time and processes it normally.
  4. When the customer is ready to leave, they tap Get Bill on their phone. They see a full itemised bill: all items ordered, quantities, service charge, and total amount.
  5. The customer pays via UPI, card (Cashfree), or cash. The Dining Session is marked as closed.

Does Pay-at-End increase per-table revenue?

It can. When customers know they are not paying per order, there is less psychological friction to ordering additional dishes or drinks during the meal. The average check size tends to be higher in Pay-at-End restaurants compared to Pay Per Order restaurants serving the same food, because customers do not self-limit to avoid multiple payment steps.

Key insight

The friction of paying per order is a real tax on order size. Pay-at-End removes that tax at the cost of a slightly higher walk-out risk. Most sit-down restaurants make the trade easily.

What happens if a customer leaves without paying?

Pay-at-End restaurants bear the same risk they always have with walk-out customers. Orderzy's system does not guarantee payment collection, it facilitates the digital tab and makes the payment flow easy. Restaurants in higher-trust environments (hotels, clubs, ticketed venues) are better suited to this model than casual street-side restaurants.

Orderzy records the customer's name and phone number at the time of ordering, which can be used for follow-up if needed.
